Overnight a big storm rolled in and we woke to the news that the road north was blocked by snow! Mark, our driver, assured us that the road would be open by the time we got there, and sure enough it was. It was hailing in Wellington when we left…
We stopped for a break in the town of Levin. I (stupidly) left my jacket on the bus, and only had my hoodie – it was FREEZING!! I toke some photos of Thomas the Tank Engine for my nephew, and turned one into a postcard and sent it off to him.
We drove a bit longer and then stopped off in Taihape for lunch. A couple of us decided to head to the sushi restaurant and I enjoyed my Japanese meal in the middle of NZ!

We hit the snow! Mark stopped the bus for us to get out and have a play in the snow! Those from Europe weren’t really impressed, but I was, as were most of the other Aussies that don’t often see snow. We were able to see the foothills of Mount Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom from the Lord of the Rings).
After we left the snow, we arrived in Taupo for a quick pitt stop.
Just north of Taupo are the Huka Falls. They aren’t very long, but are very fast and make quite a sound. We then continued along to Rotorua.
